Buying linen — for one guest room or a whole property — comes unstuck on one detail more than any other: size. A "queen" sheet only fits if it's cut to Australian measurements, and Australian sizes aren't the same as US or UK ones. Here's every standard bed size in centimetres, the sheet, quilt-cover and pillowcase dimensions that fit each, and which sizes accommodation operators actually stock.

Quick Answer Australian standard mattresses: Single 92×188, King Single 107×203, Double 138×188, Queen 153×203, King 183×203, Super King 203×203 cm. Buy the fitted sheet to the mattress size and its depth; flat sheets and quilt covers run larger for overhang.

Australian bed (mattress) sizes

These are the six standard mattress sizes sold in Australia. Width is the number that changes most between sizes; the longer sizes (King Single and up) all share the same 203 cm length.

Bed size
Mattress (W × L)
Single

92 × 188 cm

King Single

107 × 203 cm

Double

138 × 188 cm

Queen

153 × 203 cm — the most common in Australia

King

183 × 203 cm

Super King

203 × 203 cm (a square bed)

The depth trap A fitted sheet has to fit the mattress and its thickness. Standard fitted sheets have a 40 cm wall; modern pillow-top and pocket-spring mattresses are deeper and need a 50–60 cm wall, or the corners ping off. Always check wall depth, not just the bed size.

Matching sheet, quilt cover & pillowcase sizes

Fitted sheets track the mattress. Flat (top) sheets and quilt/doona covers are cut larger so they drape and tuck. These are typical Australian dimensions — cuts vary a few centimetres between manufacturers, so confirm before a bulk order.

Bed size
Flat sheet · Quilt cover (approx., cm)
Single

Flat ~180 × 260 · Quilt cover ~140 × 210

King Single

Flat ~180 × 260 · Quilt cover ~180 × 210

Double

Flat ~230 × 260 · Quilt cover ~180 × 210

Queen

Flat ~245 × 265 · Quilt cover ~210 × 210

King

Flat ~275 × 275 · Quilt cover ~245 × 210

Super King

Flat ~290 × 280 · Quilt cover ~270 × 240

Pillowcases don't follow the bed size — they follow the pillow:

Which sizes do hotels & motels actually stock?

You don't need all six. Most Australian accommodation runs a short, deliberate size list:

Stocking two or three sizes (queen + king + king single) keeps your par levels simple and your housekeeping cart predictable — every extra size multiplies the sheets, covers and pillowcases you have to hold in reserve.

A quick buying checklist

Working out how many of each to buy once you've picked your sizes? That's the par-level formula. Deciding on sheet weave and thread count? See percale vs sateen. Or browse sizes and specs across the commercial linen range.
