Buying linen — for one guest room or a whole property — comes unstuck on one detail more than any other: size. A "queen" sheet only fits if it's cut to Australian measurements, and Australian sizes aren't the same as US or UK ones. Here's every standard bed size in centimetres, the sheet, quilt-cover and pillowcase dimensions that fit each, and which sizes accommodation operators actually stock.
Australian bed (mattress) sizes
These are the six standard mattress sizes sold in Australia. Width is the number that changes most between sizes; the longer sizes (King Single and up) all share the same 203 cm length.

Matching sheet, quilt cover & pillowcase sizes
Fitted sheets track the mattress. Flat (top) sheets and quilt/doona covers are cut larger so they drape and tuck. These are typical Australian dimensions — cuts vary a few centimetres between manufacturers, so confirm before a bulk order.

Pillowcases don't follow the bed size — they follow the pillow:
- Standard — 48 × 73 cm (the everyday pillow).
- King — 48 × 90 cm (a long pillow, common on king and queen beds).
- European (Euro) — 65 × 65 cm (square, usually decorative behind the sleeping pillows).
Which sizes do hotels & motels actually stock?
You don't need all six. Most Australian accommodation runs a short, deliberate size list:
- Queen — the default guest bed. The bulk of your sheets, quilt covers and protectors will be queen.
- King — premium and family rooms; increasingly expected in mid-scale and up.
- King Single — family rooms, twin-share and bunk setups (two king singles cover a lot of configurations).
- Double / Single — older budget stock; many operators are phasing these out in favour of queen and king single.
Stocking two or three sizes (queen + king + king single) keeps your par levels simple and your housekeeping cart predictable — every extra size multiplies the sheets, covers and pillowcases you have to hold in reserve.
A quick buying checklist
- Match the fitted sheet to the mattress size AND depth (40 cm standard, 50–60 cm for deep/pillow-top).
- Buy in Australian cm — never assume a US or UK "queen" is the same.
- Keep sizes to a minimum — fewer bed sizes = simpler par stock and laundry.
- Confirm exact cuts on a bulk order — flat sheet and quilt-cover dimensions vary a little by supplier.
